Yacht brands explained: production vs premium vs semi-custom
Production, premium and semi-custom yards build to different standards and resale. Know which category a boat belongs to before you compare prices.

Key points
- Production yards such as Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria and Dufour build in volume, with wide parts and dealer networks.
- Premium yards such as Hallberg-Rassy, Swan, Princess and Sunseeker hold value better and cost more.
- Semi-custom yards build a base design to your specification, with long lead times.
Production
Production yards build hundreds of the same model a year. Beneteau and Jeanneau, both part of Groupe Beneteau, together with Bavaria, Dufour and Hanse, dominate sailboats. Beneteau, Jeanneau, Sessa and others build motor boats in volume. What you get: lower price per metre, a large second-hand market that makes the boat easy to value, and spare parts available at any large chandlery. What you give up: custom finishes, slower depreciation, and in some cases the build quality of a heavier-built boat.
Premium
Premium yards build fewer boats with higher-grade materials and finish. In sail: Hallberg-Rassy, Swan (Nautor), Oyster, Contest and X-Yachts. In power: Princess, Sunseeker, Azimut and Ferretti. A new premium boat is priced well above a production boat of the same length, and it usually holds its value better after ten years. Check the service record as carefully as on any other boat. A name does not replace a survey.
Semi-custom
A semi-custom yard builds from a base hull and lets you choose the layout, the interior and the specification. Oyster and Baltic Yachts work this way. Waiting times run to a year or more. You get exactly what you ask for. The resale buyer gets the same boat and may not want your choices.
What matters more than the badge
- Age and condition. A tired premium boat of 20 years can be worth less than a clean production boat of 8.
- Service network. Is there a dealer or workshop for this brand in Barcelona, Palma or Valencia?
- Parts and spares. Ask how long a hatch, a winch or an engine part takes to arrive.
- Model history. Some models have known problems. Ask a surveyor who has seen several of them.
How to use this
Use the three categories to build a shortlist, then compare boats within a category. A production 42 ft boat and a premium 42 ft boat are different products at different prices. See New vs pre-owned: depreciation, warranties and the second-hand market for how value holds over time.
