Timing the market

Interest in used boats rises from late winter into early summer as buyers plan their season. List early and have the boat ready for spring.

Key points

  • Buyers plan from January and shop through spring. List in time for them.
  • A boat that is still unsold at the end of summer waits for the next season.
  • Boat shows draw buyers, but a listing does not need to wait for one.

The seasonal pattern

Buyers think about the next summer in winter. Enquiries on portals rise from late winter, viewings peak in spring, and many deals close before the summer holidays so the buyer can use the boat. Interest tends to dip in late summer, when the season is half used, and again in deep winter. Your own broker's enquiry data shows the pattern for your type of boat. Ask for it.

What to do with this

  1. Decide in autumn if you plan to sell next season, and start the paperwork. See The seller's document pack: VAT, registration, CE, service history.
  2. Do the pre-sale work in winter: survey, repairs, detailing. See Pre-listing survey and mechanical audit and Cosmetic staging and detailing.
  3. List in late winter, with fresh photos taken once the boat is clean and in the water.
  4. Be available in spring for viewings and sea trials.

Boat shows

Shows such as Boot Düsseldorf in January and the Cannes Yachting Festival in September put many buyers in one place. A listing is not tied to them, and a broker can promote your boat around them. Ask whether your broker attends and whether boats on the stand are charged for.

Age and model cycles

  • A boat loses value each year it waits. A sale this season is often worth more than a higher price next season.
  • A new model launch can lower the price of the old model. Ask your broker what is coming.
  • Equipment ages: sails, rigging and engine hours add up.

When waiting is right

If the boat needs a major repair, wait for the repair, not for the season. A boat fixed in January sells better in April. If you can use the boat this summer and sell next spring, the extra season can offset a year of depreciation.
