Essential safety equipment by flag and category
Required safety gear depends on the flag, the boat's navigation zone and its distance from shore. Check the list with the Capitanía or your surveyor.

Key points
- Spain assigns boats to navigation zones, which set the mandatory equipment.
- Other flags use their own codes, so a foreign-flagged boat follows its own list.
- Beyond the legal minimum, add a second means of calling for help and check expiry dates.
How the rules work
Each flag sets its own list. Spain groups recreational boats into numbered navigation zones that describe how far from a refuge the boat may go, and the zone sets the mandatory equipment. The zone follows from the boat's design category, its equipment and its inspection. Ask the Capitanía, your surveyor or the registration agent for the list that applies, and for the zone shown on the boat's certificate. Foreign flags use their own national codes, and the list changes with the category of the passage. See CE marking and the Recreational Craft Directive: design categories A to D and How to register a yacht in Spain: Lista 6 vs Lista 7 (commercial vs private).
Gear every boat carries
- Lifejackets for each person aboard, of the right size, with lights, and spares for children.
- Lifebuoy with a light, and a throwing line.
- Fire extinguishers, placed at the helm, in the galley and near the engine.
- Pyrotechnic flares and a signal mirror, with valid dates.
- Navigation lights and sound signals.
- Anchor and chain, and mooring lines.
- Bilge pump, manual and electric.
- First aid kit.
- Compass and paper charts or a backup.
Gear for offshore zones
- Life raft, sized for everyone aboard, serviced on schedule.
- 406 MHz EPIRB, registered to your boat.
- VHF radio with DSC, and a handheld backup.
- Radar reflector or AIS.
- Tethers and jacklines for sailboats.
Check regularly
Make a table of every item with its expiry or service date, and check it before the season. See The annual maintenance schedule and antifouling.
Brief the crew
Gear helps only if the crew knows where it is. Show guests the lifejackets, the extinguishers, the VHF and the distress procedure before you leave the berth. See Basic at-sea troubleshooting.
