Upgrading marine electronics

Upgrade in order: safety first (VHF, AIS, depth), then navigation, then comfort. Choose equipment that shares a network and has local support.

Updated 2 min read

Key points

  • Safety electronics come first: a DSC VHF, an AIS transponder and a depth sounder.
  • Choose a single network (NMEA 2000) and one brand family for displays and the autopilot.
  • Budget for installation, cabling and a survey of the existing wiring.

Priorities

  1. VHF radio with DSC. A distress button sends your position to rescue services. It needs an MMSI registered to your boat, and a licence. See Skipper licences in Spain: PNB, PER, Patrón and Capitán de Yate, and foreign licence recognition.
  2. AIS transponder. A Class B unit shows you to other vessels and shows them to you. It also needs an MMSI.
  3. Depth and speed instruments.
  4. Chartplotter. Chart quality and updates matter, and a backup (a tablet or a handheld GPS) helps.
  5. Autopilot. Saves the crew on long passages and in light air.
  6. Radar for fog and night traffic, especially for crossings.

Networks

Modern instruments share data over NMEA 2000, a standard network with a backbone and drop cables. Older units use NMEA 0183, and converters bridge the two. Choose displays, sensors and an autopilot that speak the same language, and keep to one brand family for the helm electronics if you want everything to work together out of the box.

Before you buy

  • Check the existing wiring. A new display on a poor circuit gives poor results. See Electrical system and generator.
  • Check power consumption against the battery bank.
  • Decide where each screen goes, and cut holes once.
  • Ask whether a dealer in Barcelona or Palma supports the brand.

Installation

A competent owner can fit a VHF or a depth sounder. A radar mount, an autopilot and a network need a professional, and a mistake in a high-current circuit risks fire. Ask the installer for a wiring diagram and keep it aboard.

When to replace

Electronics last as long as support continues. An old plotter that works is fine. A unit that no longer gets chart updates, or has failing screens, is a reason to upgrade.

Registration

An MMSI is assigned with a radio licence, and it follows the boat's registration. Update the details after a sale or flag change. See Closing and handover: bill of sale, payment, documents, keys.
