French yacht registration

French registration (francisation) suits French and EU residents and French companies. The boat must be EU-built or duty-paid, and pass a safety check.

Updated 3 min read

Key points

  • Francisation applies to pleasure boats over 7 m, and to smaller boats above a power limit.
  • It is handled by French customs and produces an acte de francisation.
  • An annual charge applies to French-registered pleasure boats. Confirm the current rules.

What francisation is

Francisation is the French process that gives a boat the French flag. French customs run it. The result is an acte de francisation, plus a title that allows the boat to navigate.

Who qualifies

Sources describe the owner conditions in slightly different words: French nationals, nationals of the EU or EEA who have established residence in France, and French companies. One source sets a test of at least half the ownership held by EU or EEA nationals or companies. The sources are not official French texts, so check the current customs rules before you apply.

Boat conditions

  • It was built in the EU, or the applicable duties and taxes were paid in the EU. See What does VAT paid mean on a yacht?.
  • It passes a safety check.
  • Sources describe the obligation for pleasure boats over 7 m, and for smaller boats above 22 fiscal horsepower. Smaller boats receive a different document.

Documents

A source on the procedure lists these, and you should confirm them with the customs office for your region:

  • The application form (cerfa 12810).
  • The original invoice or bill of sale.
  • A national identity document and proof of residence.
  • For an EU national who has lived in France under six months, a certificate of election of domicile.
  • For a boat over 7.5 m bought in another EU state, a tax certificate.

Order of work

  1. Gather the proof of EU build or EU duty payment, and the VAT evidence. See Proving and verifying VAT status: which documents count, and checking before you offer.
  2. Book the safety check with the body customs names.
  3. Make an appointment at your regional customs office and file the application with the documents above.
  4. Receive the acte de francisation and the navigation title, and cancel the previous registration. See Transfer of ownership, flag change and de-registration.

Annual charge

French-registered pleasure boats carry an annual charge. The RYA notes it is payable whatever the owner's nationality and flag state. We have not confirmed the current amount or how it is calculated, so ask customs.

Who it suits

A resident of France with a boat on the French Riviera or in Corsica will find the French flag natural. For a Spanish resident, French registration does not change the Spanish tax position. See Can a Spanish or EU resident use a foreign-flagged yacht?.
