Transfer of ownership, flag change and de-registration
A sale ends with a bill of sale, a clean title, and the old registration cancelled. Each flag change repeats the steps in the new register.

Key points
- A boat has one flag, so the foreign registration is cancelled before a new one starts.
- Mortgages and other charges are cleared before ownership transfers.
- Report the change to the insurer, the marina and the tax authority.
The transfer
- Agreement. The buyer and seller sign the sale agreement. See Making an offer and the memorandum of agreement.
- Clear the title. Pay off any loan and have the lender release its charge. See Liens, mortgages and encumbrances.
- Pay the price. By a traceable route. See Proof of funds and anti-money-laundering checks: what to expect.
- Bill of sale. Signed by the seller, naming the buyer, the boat and its hull number. See Closing and handover: bill of sale, payment, documents, keys.
- Taxes. VAT, transfer tax or registration tax, as applies. See Spanish taxes beyond VAT: registration tax and transfer tax (ITP).
- Register the change in the register that holds the boat.
Changing the flag
A boat flies one flag, so the old registration is cancelled completely before the new one starts. The old register issues a deletion or cancellation certificate, and the new register asks for it. Ask the seller to start the deletion early, since it can take longer than the sale. Keep the boat's old identification until the new papers arrive, and avoid passages outside Spanish waters while the file is open.
Documents to collect
- Bill of sale and sale agreement.
- Deletion certificate from the old register.
- Proof of VAT status and any tax receipts. See Proving and verifying VAT status: which documents count, and checking before you offer.
- Conformity papers. See CE marking and the Recreational Craft Directive: design categories A to D.
- Owner ID, tax number and any power of attorney.
Deregistering without a sale
An owner who exports a boat, scraps it, or moves it permanently under another flag asks the register to cancel the entry. The register will want proof of the new destination or ownership. Tell the insurer and the marina on the same day.
Deadlines
Registers set deadlines for reporting a change of owner. In Poland, the register asks for notice within 30 days. Ask the register in question for its deadline on the day you sign.
