Polish yacht registration
Poland keeps a national register of yachts under 24 m. Eligibility and the practical effects abroad differ between sources, so confirm before relying on it.

Key points
- Sources conflict on who may register under the Polish flag. Confirm directly with the Polish authorities.
- Polish registration does not change VAT or customs status.
- A change of owner must be reported to the Polish register within 30 days.
Why people ask
Buyers from several countries consider the Polish flag because it is an EU flag with a simple process, and brokers and agents promote it. Check each promise against the register itself.
What the sources say
- Poland keeps a register of yachts and other watercraft under 24 m. The government portal reja24 describes it and says it runs in Polish only.
- One source states that yachts over 7.5 m, or motor boats above 15 kW, must be registered.
- Sources disagree on eligibility. One says owners of any nationality can register. Another says non-EU nationals can register through an EU-owned company.
We have not confirmed the eligibility rules against the Polish maritime law. Confirm them with the Maritime Office or the Polish Sailing Association before you plan around the flag.
What it does not change
- VAT and customs. A Polish flag does not make a boat VAT paid. See What does VAT paid mean on a yacht?.
- Spanish taxes. A Spanish resident using a Polish-flagged boat in Spain can still face the registration tax. See Can a Spanish or EU resident use a foreign-flagged yacht?.
- Licences. The skipper licence rules follow the flag state and the waters you sail. See Skipper licences in Spain: PNB, PER, Patrón and Capitán de Yate, and foreign licence recognition.
Port and customs scrutiny
Noonsite reports an unresolved situation for Polish-flagged yachts in Greece, where customs had not confirmed how they treat a non-EU owner or skipper. Keep the VAT evidence and the registration papers on board. See Proving and verifying VAT status: which documents count, and checking before you offer.
Practical points
- The register's forms and communications are in Polish, so you need a translator or agent.
- The owner must tell the register within 30 days of a change in ownership or in the boat's condition.
- Check how a lender and an insurer treat the flag before you register.
Our view
For a buyer who lives in Spain and keeps the boat in Barcelona, the Polish flag adds paperwork without solving the Spanish tax position. A buyer who lives in Poland will find it natural. See Choosing a flag and registering your yacht.
